LCD TVs

Welcome to our LCD TVs page at Flat Screen Forum.

LCD TVs are proving increasingly popular with consumers, especially as their price continues to drop and the flat screen sizes available become larger. They now bring you a great flat screen option at a very competitive price. Initially losing a lot of ground in the performance and size stakes to plasma TVs, the development of LCD TVs has moved on apace, and they now offer a serious challenge to plasmas. LCD TVs are known for having crisper, brighter images than their plasma TV rivals, which are appreciated more for their ability to reproduce natural-looking colours. An early issue with LCD TVs was the relatively long screen response time (measured in milliseconds). Only a few years ago this could be as much as 30ms, which led to bluriness when displaying fast moving action. Plasma TVs never had any such issue with response time, but again technology in LCD TVs has moved on rapidly, and the latest development products have response times as low as 5ms, meaning that any problems with blurring or fuzziness are now history. Note that LCD TVs generally have faster response times than their LCD monitor counterparts.

An advantage of LCD TVs over plasma TVs is that they are around 15pc lighter than a similarly-sized plasma, helping to make them ultra portable. LCD TV screen sizes start from as little as 13", meaning that you can buy a little TV that can easily fit into that tiny bit of space left on your kitchen worktop, or on the bedroom sidetable. Increasingly we see people wall-mounting LCD TVs, and a popular addition to high quality kitchens is now an LCD TV mounted on a kitchen cupboard. LCD TVs are also becoming increasingly common as a car customisation feature, as any fans of the hit MTV series "Pimp My Ride" will know.

LCD TVs are bright because they have a fluorescent light behind the flat screen. This means they can often be seen easier than plasma TVs during daylight hours. They also have none of the burn-in issues associated with plasma. In fact LCD TVs are more reliable than plasmas and have a longer product life, lasting about 50,000 hours versus 30,000 hours for today's plasma screens, according to LG Philips.

You will see many LCD TVs describe themselves as "HD Ready". This refers to the forthcoming High Definition TV standard. As the name implies, this standard will provide a significant advance in the quality of television pictures. Buying an HD Ready LCD TV now means that when High Definition TV signals start to be broadcast, your TV will be able to display them at the new high picture quality intended. Buying an HD Ready TV now will save you an upgrade later. The BBC HDTV trial takes place in mid-2006, and Sky is launching their HD service in May 2006.

Popular brands of LCD TV include: Sharp Aquos, Sony Bravia, Samsung and LG.
